Tea Time Tuesday The Hobbit Edition

Get ready to dig in to an awesome feast of words and food… It’s time for Tea Time Tuesday The Hobbit Edition! We all know about J.R.R. Tolkien’s amazing books, but one of the things that stood out to me while reading The Hobbit with my children was the poetry. My favorite part of The Hobbit is the unexpected party in Bilbo Baggins’ home with the 13 dwarves and Gandalf, and I wanted to have our own hobbit feast.

Featured Poem

Chip the Glasses and Crack the Plates from “The Unexpected Party” of The Hobbit

Chip the glasses and crack the plates!
Blunt the knives and bend the forks!
That’s what Bilbo Baggins hates—
Smash the bottles and burn the corks!

Cut the cloth and tread on the fat!
Pour the milk on the pantry floor!
Leave the bones on the bedroom mat!
Splash the wine on every door!

Dump the crocks in a boiling bowl;
Pound them up with a thumping pole;
And when you’ve finished if any are whole,
Send them down the hall to roll!

That’s what Bilbo Baggins hates!
So, carefully! carefully with the plates!

I absolutely love how playful this poem is. I have a feeling I would feel the same way poor Bilbo was when all of his unexpected guests took over his house. This week we set aside all of our normal poetry books, and took turns reading poetry from the book. This site has all of the poems listed: Tolkien Gateway. It definitely saved me a ton of time having all the poems listed on one page rather than searching through the book on my own.
