1. Buy secondhand books.

As nice as it is to have shiny & brand new books, the cost of new books quickly add up. Save yourself a lot of money and buy the books you need secondhand. Some great places to shop are:

  • Thriftbooks
  • Amazon
  • Used book sales
  • Garage/rummage sales
  • Used book stores
  • Buy, Trade, Sell Facebook groups

2. Utilize your local library.

Public libraries are amazing resources for homeschooling family! Not only can you borrow books and movies, but you can also attend some really fantastic educational events. Our library offers multiple storytimes every week and a variety of clubs and classes for children. We have gone to everything from LEGO Club to 3D Printing classes- all for FREE!

3. Use what you already have.

Do you have an Amazon Prime subscription? What about Netflix or Hulu? All three of these offer fantastic documentaries and educational programs as part of your subscriptions. Here are just a few of the programs we have watched as part of our homeschool lessons:

Also, don’t forget to “shop” your home… If you are anything like me you have shelves overflowing with books and old homeschool curriculum. Dust off those old materials and put them to good use! Mix and match books from different programs to create a whole new curriculum of your own.

4. Exchange curriculum with a friend.

We homeschoolers have to stick together… So don’t be afraid to reach out to a friend and ask if they would like to exchange curriculum with you! Chances are if your friend has been homeschooling for more than one year she has some unused materials taking up space. Swapping curriculum will give you fresh materials to work with and save both of you a ton of money.

5. Put the internet to work.

The internet is a homeschool landmine! Obviously this option requires a little more work on your part than just purchasing a boxed curriculum, but if you are willing to put in the time and effort there are so many free resources available out there. Some of our favorites are:

There are also plenty of bloggers, like myself, who offer free unit studies! There’s no rules saying you have to pay for curriculum. Here are the unit studies I currently have available:
